What is aseptic carton packaging made of?

What does each material do?
Aseptic carton material is a laminate: several materials work together to provide functions that a single sheet cannot provide alone. In the conventional aluminium-barrier construction described in TBA technical training, the main roles are:

Printing is sometimes shown as a separate element in a construction diagram. This is one reason descriptions of the same general laminate can use different layer counts. A layer count alone is not a complete material specification.
Why does an aseptic carton need more than paperboard?
Paperboard provides stiffness and allows the package to hold its shape. The barrier and sealing functions depend on other parts of the laminate. When evaluating a proposed material, ask what each layer is intended to do, rather than comparing only total thickness or the number of layers.
The product also matters. Milk, juice and other beverages can require different material specifications. The training material describes multiple constructions for different applications; it does not establish a single universal grade for every liquid food.
Does the laminate alone determine shelf life?
No. Material selection is one part of the aseptic packaging system. Product treatment, hygienic filling, package formation and seal integrity must work together. A statement about the foil barrier should not be interpreted as a shelf-life guarantee for a finished product.
For a purchasing discussion, start with the beverage, carton format and volume, filling-machine model and intended storage conditions. These provide a better basis for reviewing a material proposal than appearance alone.
What should a buyer request?
Ask for the proposed laminate specification, intended product application and the documentation needed to review the material on the intended line. Include any opening feature or cap requirement: an opening changes the local package structure and needs to be considered with the rest of the carton.
